Every story on my Substack thus far

Since I have a lot more people on this Substack since I first started, I thought I might just link some of the previous writing if you missed it. My favorite thing with this Substack is to write stories. There are two types on here, I’d say. There’s the longer form short stories which could be serious (though haven’t really been so far) that take much longer than a day or two to write, and then there are what maybe I can call “fun shorts” which is just a fun little story I write on a humorous idea — maybe somewhat like the In My World posts I used to do on my blog IMAO.

Anyway, there aren’t currently great ways to organize this all on Substack, but for now I have a post like this to just highlight what I’ve written so far. If you haven’t yet read it all, check it out.

Fly, You Fools — The first fun short I was inspired to do during a re-read of Lord of the Rings. It’s an alternate version of one chapter from Return of the King.

Who Murdered the Dinosaurs? — A longer form short story I wrote years ago — I think before Superego’s release. It’s two CSI’s looking into a really cold case: Evidence dinosaurs didn’t die out naturally but we’re murdered. I’m working on a sort of sequel to this with those two CSIs on yet another mystery that will eventually come here to this Substack.

Sidequest: Confidence — Another longer form short story. I love Sidequest, but I have no plans for a sequel. This is a sort of sequel short story that I’d recommend only reading after reading the novel.

Science Fiction — A longer form short story about the true nature of science.

Problematic — A longer form short story I actually wrote for National Review’s 75th-anniversary issue but never got used.

The Merchant — A fun short, and the first video game inspired one. It’s an examination of the economic logic of a merchant in a Final Fantasy-type game.

Cultural Differences — A fun short about bounty hunter Samus Aran having trouble at her new job.

Baddish Dudes — A fun short inspired by the greatest video game opening of all time.

Free Rings — Another Lord of the Rings fun short. This was inspired by the announcement of the Amazon series being about the forging of the rings of power, so here is my own take on that. The main king character in this was inspired by a minor, reoccurring character from 30 Rock. Bonus points if you can figure out who.

James Bond Versus Godzilla — Every once in a while I get asked if I’m related to Ian Fleming, and that inspired this fun short.

This Looks Like a Job For… — A superhero fun short. Batman is my favorite superhero, but I’m not wrong here.

Giving into the Dark Side — I did video games. I did comics. Gotta do a Star Wars fun short.

Vast Treasure — My newest one. It’s sort of a reflection on the nature of wealth today versus how it was viewed in the past. Or maybe it’s just a dumb Dungeons and Dragons type story.

There’s what’s on here so far. More to come soon. What I’m trying to learn to balance is writing fun little things for here when inspired along with longer short stories that will take some time to write.

And then I really have to get started on the fourth and final Superego.
